How Far You Should Sit From the TV

Apparently there is an optimal distance you should be from your TV. It is the point where where you apparently will have the best experience of whatever you are watching on TV. Awkward definition: The point where you are just not able to distinguish the actual pixels from each other.

Optimal distance from TV

If you sit closer than this “optimal” distance, the chances are there that you can actually see the pixels and lines on your television. If you sit any further from the TV, the experience is diminished. And to not bore you with formulas, I quickly wrote this calculator. It probably includes some bugs, so please to tell me if you spot any. (The formula’s are compiled from some of my notes from a lecture.)

Optimal distance from TV Calculator

Screen size:
inches
Aspect ratio: 16:9
4:3
System: PAL
NTSC
The optimal distance is:

feet
inches.

meters

So do these values match your living room?

Ikke dumt med forelesningsnotater i bloggform, StephenO.

Men du må nok jobbe litt mer med kalkulatoren, virket hvertfall ikke på Macen min…

    Stå på!

Thanks, the calculator worked nicely in FireFox then I realized it didn’t work in IE, then I managed to mess the script up trying to fix it.
Now after fixing the script, my problem is that I’m not really sure if the values are all that correct. I.E sitting 5 meters away from a 32″ TV, watching in 4:3 doesn’t sound quite right..

  3. Not working for me and I’m using Flock (Firefox, but social.)

We have a 33 inch screen, 16:9 aspect and one chair is about 4 feet from the screen while the sofa is about 8 feet away…

Hehe, yeah I must have messed up the script for FireFox, now that I forced it to work for IE… But I think, I am just going to have to publish the formulas’ in plain text, since this javascripting via the protected WordPress is not so simple.

28 inch screen here, chair about 5 feet from the screen.

  5. It’s not like my dad & me fight over the main chair. I prefer to sit further away sometimes…

Well the formula is derived from the smalles degree that you can apparently tell pixels apart. This is on average 1/60 degree (?), but will probably vary from person to person and ones eyesight.

(Script seems to be working a little better now, from what I hear…)
